One-hundred degree heat, 95% humidity, black flies, low forage quality – summers are rough going for Rainbow Angus cattle. But we like to think of our extreme South Alabama climate as a great selection tool. Research clearly shows that cattle perform better the farther north, west, and upward in elevation they go, so our Southeastern ranch, sitting just a few feet above sea level, is about as bad as it gets. As we like to say, “if they can make it here they’ll make it anywhere.” And it’s true. Every year at weaning we ship our bulls to Kansas, and we find they are more heat tolerant, more parasite resistant, and more feed-efficient than the native-born bulls. As testament to that, our Midwest custom steer feeder has bought 12 of our bulls to date, and wants more.

The same rigorous selection process that insures our bulls will work for us and for our regional customers has an added bonus for our customers, who are north, west and at a higher elevation. So while our southern neighbors buy Wyoming bulls that just lay around in the shade, our Alabama bulls work hard all summer long for our Wyoming customers!
